Movies, Historical, Music, Literature, good, Greater, Even, because, Context, seem


Question by Samian's Eighteenth Account: Do good movies, music & literature seem even greater to us because we put it in a historical context?

Take the King James Bible, for instance, or pretty much anything by Shakespeare.
When we read those things today, they seem sublime, ancient, and 'deeper' than our contemporary literature.

But perhaps when those things came out, it was just the norm, and not really special to them.

Also, whenever you look at rankings of "the greatest films in history", a lot of the top-ranked ones came out well before we were born.

Do you think we have a mental tendency to exaggerate something's greatness because it's not of our time?

I think you have a pretty good theory there. I have so many responses swirling around in my head that my brain is all blocked up and I can't think of how to voice my opinion. So, I will just say that I think you're on to something with that... although, there ARE many works of art that are older, Shakespeare being one of 'em.
