Sos Dog: The Purebred Dog Hobby Re-examined
This book delves into the world of the purebred dog, and where it is going in regards to health and the best interest of the dogs themselves. Heretofore, dogs have been bred to satisfy human goals and ambitions, but to what detriment? When the British first started their Kennel Club just over 100 years ago, and the first dog show was held, little was known about the genetics of dogs. It was assumed that when you bred the best to the best, the result was something even better. Unfortunately, this naïve ideal has led to the downfall of dogs, with a large percentage of all dog breeds being plagued with either a genetic disability, or an inherited disability. The question is, can the damage already done be repaired?
In SOS Dog: The Purebred Dog Hobby Re-Examined, authors Edith and Johan Gallant have addressed this very issue. The authors devote a chapter to the history of the dog, and how they came into the human household, and then continue with a description of the needs of the dog. They outline and detail the seven capital sins of the dog world and compare modern dog to the pariah type dogs found throughout the world that still abide by natural law. In closing, they offer suggestions of what may be done to repair the damage done by over 100 years of breeding incorrectly.
